The Site, Architecture and Building

The Centre will offer a diverse range of opportunities for organisations and individuals to participate in various sustainability focussed programs and collaborate with like minded organisations to pursue and demonstrate sustainability across the nation.

The Australian National Centre for Sustainability will provide, on-site and through networks:

  • display space where the best examples of sustainability practice, products and ideas are on show
  • a centre for both formal and informal sustainability education
  • a place to participate in local, regional and global sustainability research, management or design
  • a forum for exploring, discussing and developing possible pathways to sustainability
  • an opportunity for active collaboration between community, industry and government to further national action towards a sustainable world, particularly through the Australian National Sustainability Network

Theme

The theme of the Centre is healthy people on a healthy planet expressed through the community, industry, arts and sciences.

Location

In 2000, the National Capital Authority suggested a site for a possible National Centre for Sustainability close to where Jerrabomberra Creek flows into Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra. This site is centrally located on the edge of the Parliamentary Triangle and adjoins an ecologically-sensitive wetland.

The Centre would form a transition zone between the built environment and the wetlands to demonstrate how good design can work to the advantage of both, and rehabilitate a degraded site.

While the site is small, adjoining land (which is the responsibility of the ACT Government) is vacant. The previous Liberal and current Labor Governments have both agreed to put this area aside for the period of the feasibility study. Both the National Capital Authority and the ACT Government have been strongly supportive of the idea of a sustainability centre and if, for any reason, the preferred site is found to be not suitable or available, both authorities have offered support in finding another site.
